3 x WINES TO SERVE AT A BARBECUE
The summer months are the perfect time to set up the outdoor grill and enjoy a few beers with friends. But what about specifically pairing the food with wine? I'm here to help. Below you'll find three of my favourite summer wines that pair well with grilled food: Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Prosecco Rosé. - Gordon
PAIRING WINES WITH A BARBECUE CAN BE TRICKY
The key is finding a wine that has enough boldness to stand up to the flavours of grilled meat and vegetables-but isn't so intense that it overwhelms the food.
- Plan on serving at least one red and one white wine per person (or more). If you're serving more than 4 people, consider bringing out two varieties of red and white wine in addition to beer if you'd like to keep things interesting.
- One thing I love about summertime is all the fresh produce available at farmers markets; try pairing your grilled vegetables with an aromatic white like Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio as well as fruity rosés from Provence or Spain's Rioja region.
- One option that works well for grilled meat, fish and any side dishes is a Prosecco Rosé. With higher acidity, it has the power to cut through rich flavours and sauces including chicken or niçoise salads, salmon, lamb served pink and vegetable and beef skewers.
Sauvignon Blanc
Sauvignon Blanc is a light, crisp and refreshing wine. It's a great match for grilled fish, seafood and chicken. The acidity in Sauvignon Blanc will help cut through the fat in your grilled meats.
For example, try pairing this wine with salmon fillets-the citrusy flavours from the lemon zest will pair well with Sauvignon Blanc while balancing out its grassy notes. Alternatively, if you're grilling prawn skewers over charcoal flame (as opposed to cooking them on a gas grill), then consider serving up some chilled glasses of dry Sauvignon Blanc alongside them!
Cabernet Sauvignon
Cabernet Sauvignon is a bold red wine with a rich, complex flavour. It's often described as having notes of blackcurrant and cassis.
A great choice for pairing with grilled meat. The tannins in the wine will help cut through the fat in your meats making them easy to eat. Its bold flavour will complement the savoury flavours of grilled beef and vegetables such as asparagus.
Prosecco Rose
Prosecco Rose is a sparkling wine made from the Glera grape. It's often described as having notes of citrus and stone fruit. A great choice for serving with seafood or white meat.
The sweet, fruity flavours will complement lighter flavours in your meals such as chicken and salmon burgers. Likewise if you have a garden smoker then this is the perfect pairing for dark meats due to the dry acidity.
